Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says one person has been killed in one of the two wildfires burning on the edges of the city.

The mayor says it may be some time before the victim can be identified.

Authorities have not released any of the circumstances of the death, which occurred Monday in a 3,700-acre blaze in the northeastern San Fernando Valley.

second wildfire has broken out in the hills above Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley suburbs, prompting mandatory evacuations.

Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Frank Garrido says the blaze is at five acres but is growing quickly near Browns Canyon Road a few miles north of Chatsworth.

Garrido does not know what started the blaze shortly after 10:30 a.m. Monday, a few miles west of the 3,700-acre brushfire that has been burning since early Sunday in the valley's northeast corner.
